Matthew Conte, age 36, of Commack, died following the crash, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 in Commack, near Scholar Lane and Shaker Ridge Lane, according to Suffolk County Police.
A preliminary investigation found that a 31-year-old woman was driving an SUV eastbound on Scholar Lane when she struck Conte. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was taken to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown for evaluation. She has not been criminally charged. Police impounded her vehicle to undergo safety testing.
At the time of his death, Conte was jogging home “to his beautiful wife and two young daughters,” ages 4 and 1, according to a GoFundMe campaign to help the family with memorial expenses.
“My family has suffered an unimaginable loss,” the campaign’s creator, Taylor Alves, wrote. “Instead of arriving home safely to kiss his girls, he was taken from us.”
As of Wednesday, March 1, the GoFundMe had raised nearly $44,000 on a goal of $7,000. Those who wish to donate can do so here.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Suffolk County Police at 631-854-8452.
